Memories

Another memory of Nabbs occurred to me in the wake of Shirley's blog.  Our granny (the Chatelaine of Nabbs) looked like a sweet little grey-haired old lady in her latter years, but was not a little old lady in spirit. She was the local ladies golf champ, and when arthritis put a stop to golf, she became a fierce bridge player, and she drove an open topped sports car for a while, which in my memory was red.

So, as granny told the story, she drove her sports car up to the shop at the top of the road to get some cigarettes (alas, but everyone smoked then).  On her way she drove past a load of workmen on scaffolding who we were all facing towards the shops too. As she drove past them, red sports car, dashing headscarf, the air was full of the sort of things men on scaffolding used to shout at passing young ladies back then. "Wot you doing tonight darling?"  "Cor, fancy a bit of that!", etc etc.

Then, she told us, as she drove back with her cigs, facing them, this time there was nothing but a stunned silence, punctuated with the sounds of gasps and thuds and men falling off scaffolding.

Knowing granny, I am quite surprised she didn't stop her car and take them up on the offer of a date. But she took pity on them and carried on driving.

She told the story better than I have done too.

The Storm that hit the North on Monday did no more than wave our garden trees about a bit and cause some rippling of the Channel.

The photo that heads the blogs is of my three siblings - the ones I zoom with on a Monday - and my father on the lower lawn at Nabbs.

I had two Zoom sessions on Monday - one with the siblings - all seems well with them - and a double one with a congregation sister in the afternoon.  Col then Zoomed with his siblings, and I made him an omelette for tea.

The Green has been returned to its pristine pre-traveller state - apart from some clues that there have been horses grazing that it would not take Sherlock Holmes and his magnifying glass to solve.

"Its alimentary, my dear Watson."

Today I had my Bible student in the morning, and a one and a half hour session at the dentist in the afternoon...
